Most pooja units are designed as furniture. They should be designed as a small room.
North-east is the traditional preference, with the person facing east or north while praying. In a fixed Bengaluru floor plan that is not always possible, and we will tell you the nearest workable option rather than pretending any wall is fine.
A closed unit with a lit diya blackens the ceiling of the niche within months. We leave a vented top or a jaali panel so heat and smoke escape — the single most common defect we are asked to fix.
2700K warm light, dimmable, concealed behind a pelmet. Cool white light in a pooja unit reads clinical and flattens the brass and the silver.
Lamps, wicks, camphor, photographs and festival items need drawers. A unit without them turns the shelf itself into storage, which defeats the purpose.

See storage unitsThe traditional preference is the north-east corner of the home, with the person facing east or north while praying. In a fixed apartment plan that is often not available — we will show you the closest workable position rather than claiming any wall works.
It depends on where it sits. In a living room or dining area, jaali or shuttered doors let you close it when entertaining. In a dedicated corner or room, open is fine and feels more generous.
Ventilation. A vented top panel or a jaali section above the lamp lets heat and smoke escape. A fully closed niche with a daily diya will blacken within a few months, and it is the most common repair request we get.
Teak or a teak veneer for the frame, with marble or Corian for the platform where the lamp sits. Avoid plain laminate directly under a lamp — the heat lifts the edge banding over time.
Traditionally it is avoided, and practically it is a poor idea too: cooking grease settles on everything nearby. If space is genuinely tight, a dining-room wall is usually the better compromise.
