Built properly, 40–50kg per bay. We use 18mm ply for the deck and add a mid support on spans over 3 feet. A thin deck without support will visibly bow under two suitcases within a year.
Usually yes, running the same finish floor to ceiling so the loft disappears into the wardrobe line. Contrasting loft shutters draw the eye upward and make the ceiling feel lower.
If the loft is above 7.5 feet, yes. A side-hinged loft door at that height is awkward to hold open while you are on a stool. Gas-strut lift-ups stay open on their own.
Sometimes, if the existing side panels are sound and truly vertical. More often the old unit is not built to carry it, and the honest answer is that a new full-height unit costs less than reinforcing an old one.
