Hard water and what it does to a Bengaluru interior

Borewell water is the reason your last kitchen tap looked tired in two years. Which finishes survive it, which countertops stain, and what to specify instead.

The short answer

Specify for the water you actually have.

Large parts of Bengaluru run on borewell water carrying high dissolved calcium and magnesium. It leaves scale, and scale is abrasive, so the damage is mechanical as much as chemical: it builds on aerators and shower heads, etches polished surfaces when it is wiped off repeatedly, and dulls anything with a delicate finish. The practical consequences for an interior are narrow and specific. Choose chrome or PVD finishes over brushed brass and matt black. Choose quartz or granite over marble at the sink. Avoid clear glass shower screens unless someone will squeegee them daily. And put a softener or at least a sediment-and-scale filter at the inlet, because it is cheaper than replacing fittings.

Surfaces

Countertops, glass and tile.

01

Quartz and granite at the sink

Both handle hard water and daily wiping. Marble is calcium carbonate, the same chemistry the scale is made of, so it etches and dulls where water sits. It is a beautiful island top and a poor sink surround.

02

Shower glass needs a coating or a squeegee

Untreated glass will haze permanently within a couple of years. A factory nano-coating helps; a daily squeegee helps more; a half-height screen or a well-planned wet zone avoids the problem.

03

Grout colour matters more than tile

White grout in a hard-water shower discolours quickly. Epoxy grout in a mid tone stays looking deliberate. This is a ₹6,000 decision that changes how the bathroom ages.

04

Concealed valves are worth the extra

A concealed diverter that scales up needs a wall opened. Choose a brand with a serviceable cartridge and keep the service plate accessible, or you will be tiling twice.

At the inlet

Treating the water instead of the symptoms.

A whole-house softener is the real fix and costs roughly ₹25,000 to ₹60,000 installed, plus salt. It pays for itself in fittings, geysers and washing machines rather than in comfort, though the comfort is noticeable.

Where a softener is not practical. Many apartments have no plumbing space for one, a sediment and anti-scale cartridge at the inlet reduces the worst of it for a fraction of the price. Whichever you choose, decide before the plumbing first fix, because both need space and a bypass that is easier to build than to add.

Questions

Asked and answered.

Not directly, but the leaks it causes do. Scaled-up cartridges and aerators lead to dripping joints under the sink, and that is what swells a carcass. This is why the sink base is built in BWP rather than BWR.

In wet areas in a hard-water zone, yes, white scale against black is visible after every use. On a dry-area fitting like a wardrobe handle it is perfectly fine.

On a dry vanity face or a wall, yes. As a countertop around a basin it will etch where water stands. Quartz gives you the same visual weight without that behaviour.

No. It stops new deposits. Existing scale on fittings has to be descaled, and anything already etched, polished marble, hazed glass, cannot be reversed by treating the water.
