Bathroom waterproofing, tested before it is buried.

The most common source of a leak into the flat below — and the hardest thing to fix once tiles are over it.

The short answer

What bathroom waterproofing costs.

Bathroom waterproofing in Bengaluru costs ₹90 to ₹180 per square foot of treated area, covering the floor and walls up to 1.2 metres (full height in shower zones). A standard bathroom runs ₹18,000–₹40,000. It is always cheaper than repairing the ceiling below.

What matters here

Where bathrooms actually leak.

Almost never through the middle of the floor. Always at a junction.

01

The wall-to-floor junction

A sharp 90-degree corner cracks as the building settles. We cut a cove fillet to round it and embed reinforcing mesh across it before any membrane goes on. This one detail prevents most leaks.

02

Around the drain and every pipe

Wherever something penetrates the slab, water finds the gap around it. Each penetration gets sealed and meshed individually — this is slow work and it is where cheap jobs cut time.

03

Shower walls need full height

Splash reaches far higher than people expect. In the shower zone we go floor to ceiling, not to the 1.2m line used on the other walls.

04

Nothing is tiled until it is tested

We flood the bathroom and hold it for 48 hours. If the level drops or the ceiling below shows anything, we redo it then — while it is still accessible.

How we do it

The parts that decide whether it lasts.

Every failure we get called to fix started with one of these being skipped.

Cove fillet at every junction

Water gets in at the 90-degree wall-to-floor corner. Rounding it into a fillet before the membrane goes on is the step most often skipped.

Reinforcing mesh at stress points

Corners, pipe penetrations and drain outlets get fibreglass mesh embedded in the first coat. These are where every failure we are called to fix started.

Two cross-applied coats

Second coat at 90 degrees to the first, so a thin patch in one is covered by the other. Single-coat application is not waterproofing.

48-hour ponding test before tiling

We flood it and watch it. Testing after the tiles are down means breaking a finished floor to find the leak.

Step by step

How a bathroom is waterproofed.

Four stages, and the last one is the only proof that matters.

Diagnose the source

Water travels. We trace where it is entering, not just where it is showing, because treating the stain instead of the source is why most waterproofing fails twice.

Strip and prepare

Remove existing finishes back to the substrate, cut out loose material, and round every wall-to-floor junction into a cove fillet.

Membrane application

Two coats of the specified system, cross-applied, with reinforcing mesh at all junctions, corners and pipe penetrations.

Ponding test

The area is flooded and held for 48 hours before anything is tiled over it. If it does not hold, we redo it — before it is buried under a floor.

Good questions

Questions worth asking first.

A standard Bengaluru bathroom costs ₹18,000–₹40,000, or ₹90–₹180 per square foot of treated area. Repairing the ceiling of the flat below after a leak typically costs several times that, plus the relationship with your neighbour.

1.2 metres on general walls, full height in the shower zone. Splash travels much further than people expect, and a leak at 1.5 metres in a shower wall is a common failure in jobs that stopped at the standard line.

We plug the drain, flood the bathroom floor with water and leave it for 48 hours, checking the level and the ceiling below. It is the only real proof the membrane works, and it has to happen before tiling — after that the floor has to be broken to fix anything.

There are surface-applied products that claim this, and they buy time at best. Genuine waterproofing sits under the tiles. If your bathroom is leaking into the flat below, the floor has to come up.

7–10 days including curing and the ponding test, before tiling starts. We sequence bathrooms one at a time so you always have a working one in the house.
