Not around a kitchen sink
Marble is calcium carbonate. Lemon, vinegar and descaler etch it, and Bengaluru borewell water leaves deposits that get wiped off with exactly the products that cause etching. Quartz there, marble elsewhere.
What it costs laid in Bengaluru, which varieties behave, and the honest case for and against putting it in a home with hard water and small children.
Italian marble in Bengaluru runs roughly ₹250 to ₹900 per square foot for the slab depending on variety and lot, and laying, grinding and polishing adds about ₹150 to ₹250 per square foot on top. So a finished floor lands somewhere between ₹400 and ₹1,150 per square foot, a range wide enough that the variety you choose matters more than any other decision. Statuario and Calacatta sit at the top; Botticino, Crema Marfil and Dyna sit at the sensible end and behave better day to day. It is a beautiful floor and a demanding one, and it is worth knowing which parts of the demand you are signing up for.
| Variety | Look | Indicative slab rate | Behaviour |
|---|---|---|---|
| Botticino | Warm beige, fine even grain | ₹250 – ₹380/sft | Forgiving; hides everyday marking well |
| Crema Marfil | Cream, soft veining | ₹280 – ₹420/sft | Forgiving; the safe default |
| Dyna / Perlato | Beige with stronger movement | ₹300 – ₹450/sft | Good in larger rooms |
| Carrara | White-grey, soft grey veins | ₹400 – ₹650/sft | Shows etching; needs sealing discipline |
| Calacatta | Bright white, bold veining | ₹600 – ₹900/sft | Statement stone; least forgiving |
| Statuario | White, sharp grey veining | ₹650 – ₹900+/sft | Statement stone; least forgiving |
Rates are indicative and move with lot and availability. Marble is bought by slab from a specific lot, so the only meaningful price is the one against the slabs you have actually seen.

It scratches and it is unforgiving of dropped things. Beautiful in a formal living room, punishing in a family room that doubles as a play area.
A penetrating sealer at laying, and again every two to three years. Skipping the second one is how a floor picks up a permanent stain from something ordinary.
Polished marble underfoot when wet is genuinely dangerous. A honed or leathered finish keeps the material and removes most of the risk.
Italian marble is laid on a full mortar bed, not on tile adhesive, and it is ground and polished in place after laying so the joints disappear. That is three separate site operations, laying, grinding, polishing, and the grinding produces slurry that has to be contained and removed. It is why the laying cost is a meaningful fraction of the material cost, and why it cannot be compressed into a weekend.
Allow for slab selection before any of it: you or we go to the yard and choose the actual slabs, because two lots of the same named variety can look nothing alike. On a floor this expensive, choosing from a sample tile rather than the lot is the one mistake with no remedy.
Different rather than strictly better. Italian varieties generally have finer grain and more consistent lots; good Indian marble such as Makrana is excellent and often harder-wearing. Italian costs more partly for the look and partly for the import.
A good marble-effect porcelain costs a fraction, does not etch, does not stain and does not need sealing. What it does not do is have depth, the pattern is printed and repeats. If you want the material, buy the material; if you want the look, tile is the sensible answer.
On a floor, not much, the issue is standing water and acidic cleaners rather than hardness itself. In a bathroom or around a sink, yes, and that is where we would steer you to a different material.
Yes. Marble can be re-ground and re-polished in place, which is a genuine advantage over anything printed. It is disruptive and it is not cheap, but a marble floor is recoverable in a way a damaged tile floor is not.
